Roxbury seniors stepped and swayed with a "teaching artist" from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in a class at Central Boston Elder Services on Wednesday afternoon. Boston's Vivo Performing Arts presented "AileyDance for Active Aging" workshop, so residents could learn movements inspired by Ailey's choreography, the arts organization said in a statement.
Something about the way the dancers’ bodies moved made me feel weak. Not in a “coming down with the flu” way, but instead as if I was suddenly softening like candle wax. I looked around at faces similarly entranced. There was something so vulnerable about how the dancers moved to the music, with an intuition that gently chipped away at the world sitting on our collective shoulders. During a December performance in New York, I watched Alvin Ailey dancers perform a piece called “Difference Between,” which was all at once energizing and melancholic. I had no idea what the choreography meant to convey — I’m, after all, not a “dance person” — but I was somehow seeing and hearing moments of longing and fear, and later in the piece, a reckoning with a beautiful new beginning.
LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - A world-renowned dance instructor from New York visited Laurel Thursday to conduct a special class and do some recruiting for a prestigious summer dance program in the Big Apple. Melanie Person, who is co-director of the Ailey School in New York, taught a master ballet class Thursday morning at Laurel Middle School. It’s part of a three-day residency in the Magnolia State, organized by the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience in Meridian. She’ll teach two other classes Friday in Meridian before hosting an audition Saturday for a prestigious summer dance program at the Ailey School.
Sebastian Garcia is celebrating his first season as a member of the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. When the company returns to Philadelphia this weekend, audiences will see Garcia stepping onto a stage that feels like familiar ground. The Bronx native — who once trained at Philadelphia’s Rock School for Dance Education under the direction of Bo and Stephanie Spassoff — began his formal training at the Harlem School of the Arts and continued at the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. His dedication to the craft also led to him receiving the En Avant Award, which allowed him to work with choreographers including Jessica Lang and Alexei Ratmansky. Previously, Garcia has danced for the Black Iris Project and has worked on Broadway projects with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and at Carnegie Hall. Now, as he takes on two key roles in 'Revelations', as well as world premieres of new works 'Difference Between' and 'Jazz Island,' Garcia’s return to Philadelphia marks a new chapter — and a bold new era under Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack — with the influential dance company.

As the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater opens a five-day run at the Fox Theatre, its new artistic director, Alicia Graf Mack, is carrying the torch handed to her by the late Judith Jamison — an icon in the industry.
ATLANTA, Ga. - It may be a new era for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, but audiences can expect the same powerful and passionate storytelling as the company returns to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre this week. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox Theatre stage starting tonight and continuing through Sunday, February 15th for six public performances, including the world premieres of two works and the company premiere of another. It’s a long-running tradition for the groundbreaking company — founded by Ailey in New York in 1958 — to perform in Atlanta during the month of February; while last year’s engagement paid tribute to late artistic director Judith Jamison, this year’s tour marks an exciting new beginning as the first under new artistic director Alicia Graf Mack. Graf Mack was a star Ailey performer from 2005 and 2014, and was brought into the company by Jamison.
Alvin Ailey’s name is synonymous with dance. A documentary, Portrait of Ailey, has been produced and provides a much larger context for Ailey’s life. I was honored to moderate a panel discussion at the Center for Civil and Human Rights at a screening of the documentary. Artistic Director Alicia Graf Mack joined me for a discussion about dance, Alvin Ailey, and the legacy she has been entrusted with. Mack shared how her love of dance came about, speaking about a videotape of Judith Jameson performing “Cry,” which let her know that she could be a dancer. With her parents' support, she began to learn “the language of dance.” She remembers seeing Alvin Ailey on stage and speaks about how all humans dance. She eventually joined the Alvin Ailey Dance Company under the tutelage of Judith Jameson.
