The Star Ledger - At Newark’s AileyCamp, Dance Is Just One Form Of Expression

Cherish Jones sat pasting together body parts she had clipped from magazines to form a ballet dancer doing a plie, a move familiar even to non-fans that involves bending both knees outward and dipping straight down. Cherish, 12, was working on an interdisciplinary project at AileyCamp, a six-week program based at Newark Arts High School, where she and 65 other campers study dance and visual arts. The collage was meant to reinforce both forms of expression.

Dance Teacher - Ana Marie Forsythe, Dance Teacher’s 2023 Awardee of Distinction, on Why Lester Horton’s Technique Continues to Inspire

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Ana Marie Forsythe has been teaching for most of her life. Now 79, she first taught dance in her teens, just a few years after beginning her own dance training. She got her start in ballet, but soon switched to Horton technique, a movement language developed in California in the 1930s and ’40s by the choreographer Lester Horton. It is in that technique that she found the freedom and power to really move the way she wanted to. She quickly found a second calling in helping others to develop that same power and range of movement in themselves.

BK Reader - Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Makes Triumphant Return To BAM For Limited Engagement

The world-renowned dance troupe will perform two programs at BAM — one featuring the seminal works of Alvin Ailey himself, and the other featuring a distinctly Brooklyn mix of rare and recent works. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater six-day series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music is going to feel like a homecoming. Maybe it's because of the Brooklyn-themed program. Perhaps it's because BAM is where Ailey first performed as a dancer in 1956, two years before he founded his paradigm-shifting dance company.

Dance Magazine - How Judith Jamison Started Dancing for Alvin Ailey

“There is about her an aura of mysticism. She appears onstage, larger than life, more an apparition than a performer, compelling us to look upon her as we might a temple dancer—with a sense of religiosity, of awe.” Those were the opening lines of Olga Maynard’s November 1972 Dance Magazine cover story on Judith Jamison, then in her late 20s and at the height of her powers as a star performer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
